Sequoias Just for Me?

A long time ago, I asked Kennis of Itch-to-Stitch to make a pattern for this type of pants/capris. I even sent her a picture of a favorite rtw (ready to wear, from a store) pair of mine. So I’ve waited a while for these awesome Sequoias. But were they designed just for me? No, I don’t think so, since Kennis designs for herself and she hikes a lot. Of course, she needs cargo pants!  But I can pretend she made them just for me! Wahoo! I am so glad she designed this pattern though. As my closet has moved closer to becoming a greater percentage of handmade clothing, I really wanted to be able to replace several pair of this style of capri pants that I wear often.

When the tester call was posted, I was very sick, snuggled up on the sofa with blankets and the heating pad. But I recognized the pattern I’d been waiting for and knew I had to test! And it’s the reason I signed up for the shorts rather than the cargoes. After being selected a day or so later, I crawled off the sofa to print the pattern and collapsed in exhaustion. It took an hour and a half the next day to tape and cut the pattern (just the paper)! I wondered how I was going to manage! Eventually I recovered and got back to my sewing room, yay! I’m wearing my Sequoias with a favorite top, Kathryn Top & Dress, also from Itch-to-Stitch.

I used Oxford cloth from my stash for my shorts which was a dream to work with. It’s a thicker fabric usually used for shirts. For the snaps, KAM to the rescue! This color matched so well, I had to go with it! I can’t wait to sew the cargo length and to make Sequoias in every color! The comfort and casualness of these are perfect for my lifestyle and the waistband is genius! To get my pair, I used size 6, graded to size 2 waist, scooped out the lower back rise and cut a horizontal split there too. I also have to flatten the hips. On my next pairs, I will add shortening the front rise about 1/2″ to my other alterations and these will be perfect!

Note: The alterations I did to perfect the fit are usual ones I have to do to most pants patterns to fit my shape and size.

Here are the features of Sequoias which come in sizes 00-20 and labeled as an intermediate+ pattern:

  • Functional fly front zipper with snap closure
  • Ribbing/elastic waistband
  • Relaxed and straight leg silhouette
  • Comfortable medium rise
  • Front patch pockets with slanted openings
  • Back patch pockets with flaps and snap closure
  • Options for long pants and shorts
  • Side cargo pockets with flaps and snap closure (with long pants option only)
  • Leg strap for securing rolled up pant legs (with long pants option only)
  • Layers feature (print only the sizes you need)

It is on sale for $9.60 through Jan 30. Hurry on over to get your copy! Volume discounts still apply in the shop!

Look for me in more colors as the year progresses!

  1. Your shorts really look great – don’t wear shorts much anymore, but really looking forward to making the pants. A little bird told me Crystal might be leading a future sew along!!
